TREVISO
Medioeval town, surrounded by sixteenth century walls, Treviso is an elegant city lying at the confluence of the Sile and Botteniga rivers, canals from which cro ss it picturesquely.Long porticoes and frescoed house facades give many of the street an appearance quite distinct from those of other towns in the region. The main street of the centre, calmaggiore, wher e modern commerce has reached a sort of compromise with the past. The most sightseeing place is the early thirteenth-century palazzo dei trecento, at the side of the Piazza dei Signori.
CASTELFRANCO VENETO
Once stood on the western edge of Treviso's territory and battlemented brick walls that the Trevisans trew around the town in 1199 to protect it against the Paduans still encircle most of the old centre ( or Castello ). |
Castelfranco was also the birthplace of Giorgione and possesses the famous painting" Ma donna and Child with S.S.Francis and Liberale " usually known simpli as the Castelfranco Madonna that we can admire in the Duomo.
ASOLO
Known as " la città dai cento orizzonti" ( the city with a hundred horizons), the medieval walled town of Asolo presides over a tightly grouped range of nearly gentle peaks in the foothills of Dolomities. Memorabilia of Asolo'celebrated residents are gathered in the Museo Civico Maggiore in Piazza Maggiore. The Theatre Duse occupies part of the Castello, most of which is also currently bein g restored. From 1489 to 1509 this was the home of Caterina Cornaro, one of the very few woman to have played a major part in Venetian history.
