Venice is a unique city; in fact everyone agrees in defining it "a city unlike any other in the world". It boasts an immense "historic centre", which is entirely pedestrian. The only means of the "vaporetti" (a municipal public service which applies accessible prices) and of taxi (these too are a means of transportation by water with prices which reflect their comfort and any case are much higher than those of land taxis). There are also the "gondolas", characteristic and elegant boats, used for short "tours" whose prices may not be accessible to all. The rates for all of the above-mentioned means may be requested at the offices of the A.T.P.
The historic centre of Venice welcomes approximately twelve million visitors each year, and in the days of greatest tourist influx, it is not easy to get from one place to another either on foot, or by vaporetto. In the interest of everyone, resident and tourists, to stay in Venice means to observe eceptional rules of behaviour, as ecceptional as the configuration of this city. Therefore we ask you to bear in mind the following suggestions: 1. When you are walking throught the city, especially in the narrowest "calli", you must keep to the right, one person behind the other, allowing room for person coming from the other direction. 2. If you wish to stop on a bridge to admire a view of a canal or the façade of a palazzo, you must always leave room for others to pass. Avoid sitting, even for the briefest of stops, on the steps of the bridges because, in this case as well, you would create problems for the flow of pedestrian traffic. 3. Should you choose to go from one point to another in the city using the vaporetto, remember to consult the rates and the itineraries by asking for information on the boarding docks or at the office of the A.T.P. Prefer today's line 82, which is specifically touristics, because line 1 is the line used mainly by residents and is therefore already crowed by those who must move throught the city for their daily occupations. Acquire your ticket before boarding to avoid fines or surcharges. Both on the boarding docks and aboard the vaporetti, please remove backpacks and place them on the ground or in the designated baggage area. Always leave passageways on the boarding docks and on the vaporetti clear to allow others to board or to get off. 4. Respect the rules imposted by the city of Venice which prohibit even men to walk throught the streets barechested or sporting apparel commonly worn on beaches. 5. Help the city keep itself clean by using the designated wastebaskets to throw away waste-paper and any other refuse. 6. It is not infrequent for some tourists to be tempted to have picnic lunches in the city just as they might in a forest during a trip to the mountains. This is prohibited by the regulations for public security. Therefore, in case of necessity, it is advisable to ask a policeman if there are any spaces nearby which are specifically purpose. 7. As in any city, there is the risk of being "pick-pocketed" especially on boarding docks and vaporetti, or in the more crowded streets. It is therefore advisable to protect yourself from this risk by keeping valuables and wallets in your pockets, bags, or better yet, in out-of-sight carry-alls which may not be easily stolen. 8. Beware of "intromettitori" ("middle-man") and "abusivi" (person who might offer you, without the proper authorization, visits to glass showrooms, stores, etc..., parcking areas (especially at the Tronchetto) or means of trasportation. 9. Disabled tourists may visit the city in a rather comfortable manner by following the itineraries suggested by the offices of the A.T.P. and consulting the plants distribuited without charge by these offices. |
